I watched a vid on Zen Buddhism, and got further interested in it. So I tried to find as good a book as I could. This was a good look into Zen Buddhism. At least from my perspective. It was odd hearing a very British voice reading it. It almost felt culturally voyeuristic.

The book goes over the history and believes and methods of Zen Buddhism.

I was surprised to learn how violent some of the prominent Zen figures of the history were. 30 lashes with a stick, someone thrown off a building, even a brutal death of a cat to make a point. Also be ready for some rather blunt language from some anecdotes.

Also be ready for inconsistent themes. Zen is not so much about a peaceful mind. As it is freedom from a consistent mind. Defying definitions, and logic. Even defying Buddhism.

It was a fine read. Still churning on some of the ideas.

This was well written and well read by the author. It defines its characters well. And makes them rise out of the page. It knows what it wants to do, it gets to the business of doing it, but doesnt get to heavy on the way of getting there.

A really affecting story of race, queerness, history, and freeing one's self.

In Band 8 lernen kommt eine interessante Person dazu - Custas. Ein kleine überstürzter Junge, dessen Beine nicht seine eigenen sind, so kann man sagen. Den unsere Hexen aber auch seine Beine nicht zurück geben können, weil - nun ja Heilzauber sind eben nicht erlaubt. Doch um das ganze noch weiter zu treiben ist da eine Hexe die sich nicht daran halten mag und Custas die Wahrheit sagt über die Lüge dieser Welt. Und wisst ihr was? Ich verstehe ihren Standpunkt absolut...

Wie im letzten Teil schon bemerkt treffen wir auch hier wieder, wenn auch weniger auf Beldaruth. Er ist einfach keine Person die ich wirklich mag, die den Geist eines Weisen für mich ausdrückt. Durch seine ungehobelte Art sehen wir Quiffrey aber doch sein Herz öffnen gegenüber Coco. Deren beiden Charactere haben hier eine sehr schöne Interaktion.

Im weiteren Verlauf lernen wir auch einen ehemaligen Schüler Orugios kennen, der nun selbst Lehrer ist. Seine Schülerin ist auch etwas… ähm Bossy? Auf jeden Fall kein "kleines Mädchen", sondern schon eine Persönlichkeit. Dafür, dass wir noch nicht viel von Orugio wissen, lernen wir hier ne ganze Menge - hinten rum.

Alles in allem hat es mir ein klein wenig besser gefallen als das letzte Band. :3

Horror is not my favorite genre. I only picked up this book because I had read some good reviews. And it was great. Even without the horror thing, the book could stand as a great novel. It follows a woman who seems to leave a trail of dead former partners across decades (centuries) without aging herself. The childhood friend of one of her victims starts piecing it all together. So the book takes largely the form of a series of testimonials from people related to the victims. Mini-narratives. And they're brilliant. I could not put this book down. #books #bookstodon Highly recommended.

This book has frank discussions of sex and masculinity. It fully acknowledges that teenagers have sex, but does not glorify nor damn it.

This was a really interesting book. As a guy, who was/is struggling with this subject. And as a guy who avoided all of this in his teens and 20s. Mostly because I was scared about how any of it could go bad. But reading this, I find out even the guys doing them regularly are not sure what they're doing. And are worried about it still. Im dritten und letzten Teil gibt Tchaikovsky nochmal Gas. Im Gegensatz zum zweiten Teil lässt der Spannungsbogen zwischendurch nicht sonderlich nach. Alle bekannten Charaktere sind voll in die Geschichte involviert, Bündnisse werden geschmiedet, die Handlung wird insgesamt etwas actionreicher. Alles läuft auf das Finale hinaus, und eben dieses hat der Autor hinbekommen. Mal wieder eine gute Space Opera.
